PRINTS
I began my journey as a printmaker in 2022 at NYU, and have really enjoyed learning about this incredibly diverse and incredible way of making art. Over this time I have made a variety of copper plate etchings (with aquatint and spit bite), lino prints, monoprints and collagraphs.
I owe my achievements in this field to the teachings of professors Kiki Smith & Valerie Hammond, who taught me the foundations of everything I love about printmaking.

This project came to be from my exploration of a medieval bestiary which detailed the meanings of different animals. I was particularly interested in birds, as I find that they have a certain freedom that I currently lack in my life. In the medieval tradition, birds were often symbolic, but I chose to approach them not just as symbols, but as portraits.
For this work, I selected two birds to represent two of the most significant figures in my life—my best friends, Isa and Berni. Isa’s bird is the Heliodromos (red), a mythical creature perpetually chasing the sun, symbolizing relentless pursuit and aspiration. Berni’s bird is the Kingfisher (blue), a real bird revered for its ability to calm storms, symbolizing tranquility and resilience.
Informed by these medieval beliefs, I envisioned the birds as vivid portraits of my friends, each embodying qualities that resonate with my relationship with them. The two-plate etching captures these birds as they approach one another, each traveling in opposite directions—a visual representation of the balance and contrasting energies they bring to my life.

Building upon my previous work, this piece continues the exploration of representing important people in my life through the symbolism of birds, drawing once again from the medieval bestiary. In my research I came across two new types of birds: the Titmouse and the Martineta. The Titmouse is described as “a bird that is curious about other birds”, one that can only be captured when a hunter lays a trap, showing the Titmouse a dead bird to draw it in. The Martineta on the other hand is a bird that does not decay when it dies. Together, these birds became metaphors for the relationships I have with my close friends at NYU, representing the tension between connection and the fear of alienation. This piece is a reflection of my insecurities within a group dynamic. Before coming to NYU, I struggled with a sense of belonging, unable to envision a scenario where a larger group would care enough to welcome me into friendship. Yet, despite the newfound connections, I continue to feel as though I am already somehow absent—destined to slip away unnoticed. In creating this work, I sought to convey that sense of emotional distance and the lingering fear of impermanence, encapsulating both my vulnerability and the complexities of belonging in a community.
